Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman known for inventing dynamite.  In 1888, the death of his brother Ludvig lead newspapers to publish obituaries of Alfred in error. One obituary titled "Le marchand de la mort est mort" ("The merchant of death is dead"). Not wanting to be remembered in this way, he decided to donate most of his wealth to found the Nobel Prize.
