Woodrow Wilson ('Woody') Guthrie (1912-1967), was a famous American folk singer.  Guthrie's notoriety grew in the early 1940's after he landed in New York. He was welcomed by the city's liberal folk music crowd who affectionally dubbed him "the Oklahoma cowboy". In 1940 Guthrie wrote his most popular song, "This Land Is Your Land".
